Chandralekha Singh (KGP 1988) & Jeremy Levy Student Excellence Awards in the honour of Prof. Mandakini Majumdar and Prof. G P Sastry
Recipients for 2018-19: Shubham Jena and Prajwal Singhania
IIT KGP is instituting several new student awards and scholarships from the upcoming semester beginning July 2018. The Chandralekha Singh (KGP 1988) and Jeremy Levy Student Excellence Awards in the honour of Prof. Mandakini Majumdar and Prof. G P Sastry will be conferred on Foundation Day to Shubham Jena and Prajwal Singhania.
For alumna Prof. Chandralekha Singh [1988/MSc/PH/SN] and her husband Prof. Jeremy Levy from the University of Pittsburgh, USA, the motivation was commemorating the names of former faculty members at IIT Kharagpur. Late Prof. Mandakini Majumdar (nee. Deshpande) and Prof G P Sastry profoundly impacted the lives and careers of their students. While the former, was a pioneering woman engineering expert to serve as a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, the latter who taught at the Department of Physics, was a very popular teacher and wrote several text books. For Prof. Singh and Prof. Levy, who themselves are academicians at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, these are legacies of teacher-student rapport of a close-knit campus like IIT Kharagpur.
The annual award will be given to top two undergraduate students at IIT Kharagpur admitted through JEE (Advanced) and studying in 2nd or 3rd or 4th and 5th year in any Department, School or Center, without any backlog. The amount of the award will be Rs. 50,000/- per student per academic year.
The award is instituted to recognize and support excellence in academics for those who come from families of limited means. A key criterion of this award is the flexibility in deciding the means background which has been extended to not exceeding Rs. 10 Lakh per year. The amount may be slightly adjusted every year based on Cost of Living Index.
“We have observed that the upper cut off for economic background of students for existing scholarships and awards are at such a threshold, that students falling in marginally higher category do not qualify for those benefits. While considering the cost of living, they too need some sort of financial support” opined Prof. Subrata Chattopadhyay, Dean, Alumni Affairs.
This donation was facilitated by the IIT KGP Foundation USA. The Foundation earlier this year, facilitated donations for funded foreign internships and a hi-tech ambulance for the students.
“We are working extensively with our alumni in USA, UK, Canada, Australia to offer a varied range of support for the students. The alumni are already supporting students’ travel for international competitions or host them while they are visiting those countries” said Prof. Chattopadhyay.

To tackle the abysmally poor doctor-to-patient ratio and the demographic divide, our country need technology to come as an enabler in ensuring quality healthcare and tackle inequity. The challenges faced in ensuring accessible, affordable and appropriate healthcare to all are in fact many as well as complex.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world.
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP) is the first IIT to start a School of Medical Science & Technology and a super specialty hospital with technology development focus is coming up fast in the campus. Currently, about forty faculty members, drawn from different departments are working on more than twenty five projects in this area that involve physicians, life science domain experts of collaborating institutions.
With an aim to encourage cross-disciplinary interaction of young students / researchers of medical and engineering domain, under the ICMR-IITKGP MoU, a student exchange program has been introduced. This student-student interaction is expected to enrich either side and make the team come up with new ideas and solution strategy on a given healthcare challenge. The students are introduced to skill of identifying the needs of healthcare system with the help of mentor/s, develop ideas/designs to resolve the health challenge and introduced to regulations and intellectual property right and soft skills of presentation. Besides travel and stay related support for the 8 weeks internship period, selected teams at the end of internship period will be awarded Rs 2 Lakhs each to develop something in the form of prototype over a period of next one year. An indirect benefit of this internship program is seen at mentor level collaborations and two institutes, one from technology domain and the other from medical domain, coming together. This is to promote greater synergy in healthcare solution development space towards development of technology based solutions and meet the unmet needs and tackle inequity.
Students undertaking MBBS, clinical postgraduate degree courses (e.g., M.D., DNB) or Ph.D. students in clinical/life sciences subjects from ICMR institutes or medical colleges/ Scientist B working at ICMR institutes will be working with fellow engineering intern and other students in the labs of the IIT Kharagpur for short durations. Vice a versa, individuals undertaking BE/ BTech (in a stream of engineering with a potential of having impact on health through technology), engineering postgraduate degree courses (MTech), PhD (engineering) from IIT Kharagpur will be provided support for a supervised internships at the ICMR institute/medical college. The applicants will be required to provide names of a mentor from their institute. In order to accommodate students of certain medical colleges who are keen to join but have documented evidence of issues at their respective colleges making it difficult to conclude the whole of internship in summer break, the internship period of 8-10 weeks will be spread out over summer and winter break.

Maintaining a well-rounded personality with good soft skills and the ability to work under pressure has paramount importance. During the internship, the professional acumen, and ability to complete deliverables well before set deadlines and building up on regular constructive feedbacks helped immensely. Also, to get accustomed to the company's workplace culture and building professional relationships within the firm are very crucial to your overall experience."
The students have also received close to 150 offers for compulsory internship during May-June 2017 within a month of start of internship season. The companies which have made most offers are as Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Visa, Adobe, Linkedin, American Express, Deutsche Bank etc. There has been a balanced mix of both core and non-core engineering companies.
“A student should look for an internship in the field of his/her interest. During the internship, they must show a prolific attitude to take up the tasks and contribute through original thoughts and innovation. One should be able to show an overall positive outlook so that the organization can rely on and offer them the employment as a PPO” said Chairman of Career Development Centre at IIT Kharagpur.
IIT Kharagpur has given special emphasis on improved performance of students in the interviews for internship and placement. The final year students underwenta pre-assessment test in August and one more is scheduled in September. Also soft skills training by professional agencies will be offered to all students.
